Diving Koh Lipe - The Best Dive Sites of Southern Thailand

Lipe National Marine Park – The Best Dive Sites in the Southmost island of the Westcoast in Andaman Sea, Thailand. Koh Lipe is offering more than 20 different dive sites in the Butang archipelago and Tarutao National Marine Park and nowadays the island is a very popular tourist destination with many bars, restaurants and accommodations.

Koh Lipe offers variety of different types of diving for every type of divers, some with shallow reefs, dramatic wall dives, and everything around.

Koh Lipe is among over 30 small islands, the reefs around the Tarutao National Marine Park which is one of Asia’s oldest Marine Parks. The islands and the reefs are in very good condition and thus it’s so easy to reach excellent dive sites like Stonehenge, 8 Miles, Koh Adang, Koh Sawang, etc.

This dive site has many small rock formations and wall-like structures, easy to slow down a bit when facing current. We had only a small current and better visibility to take great photos. After two deep dives, it was time for a lovely soft coral dive.

There were soft corals everywhere, looks like fields of colorful flower bouquets waiving with the sea tide. This dive site starts from 5 meters, making it easy to take some amazing photos if you have sunlight. It was a magnificent dive site with a lot of Butterfly fish, Puffer fish, little Shrimps and even a Blue Dragon nudibranch (Pteraeolidia ianthina, Glaucus atlanticus).

It’s topography of this dive site makes it worth for a visit as well as the huge variety of marine life such as gorgonian sea fans, bright red anemones and big barrel sponges. There are more variety of fish life from; lionfish, frogfish, batfish, ornate ghost pipefish, huge moray eels and schools of trevallies, barracudas and often leopard sharks or whale shark will be seen.

8 Mile Rock
The dive site consists of several submerged pinnacles from 16 meters to 40 meters depth. You are more likely to see Manta Ray and Whale Sharks and deep down Leopard Sharks hiding in the sand and Giant Groupers reside between the rocks.

The pinnacles are resident of a variety of marine life like; Scorpion fish, Moray Eels, Lionfish, Manta Rays, Devil Rays Giant Grouper or Whale Sharks make it perfect end to any dives. Just keep an eye on! Due to the strong current, 8 Mile Rock is on suitable to dive on a certain days of the visibility. The best time to dive  8 Mile Rock is just after halfmoon, so you better check your lunar calendar before diving. We would recommend that only qualified diver at least Advanced diver or with similar experience should dive in this dive site because of the depth, tidal currents and variable visibility.

Koh Adang
Koh Adang (Nursery Bay is a perfect shelter at the north end of its long beach, it is often used for a training site with plenty to see. The large sand patch is also popular with blue spot String Rays and Moray Eels. The reef serves as a nursery for great hard corals, Giant Clams, Juvenile Yellow Box fish, Yellow Tail Barracudas and Harlequin

Koh Adang (Hin Yai/Big Rocks) is a great spot on the west coast of Koh Adang, with strong currents flow through the channel at the right time of the month between Koh Adang and Koh Rawi. Have a look at huge Boulders lining, the coast appears one after the other while drifting along, the convenient spots to stop over for a few minutes. Large rays or Nurse Sharks sleeping underneath are often be seen. There are Juvenile Emperor Angelfish, Clown Triggerfish and Maldavian Seasnails for those who like the smaller creatures.

Koh Sawang
This site located on the south edge of the marine parks, the dive site can be dive around the island. The shallows area gather with large colonies of hard corals and on the southern side those colorful soft corals cover all the rocks which drop down sharply to the deeper ends. Spectacular soft corals, Christmas Tree Rock, and spotted reef fish make it a spectacular dive site. Off the islands spot, a 10m tall cone shaped Christmas Tree Rock covered the white soft corals, standing alone makes it worth for a visit. Spectacular soft corals, Nudibranchs, Butterflyfish are often found around the area including Pennant Bannerfish and Long-Nose Butterfly fish.

Had an absolute blast on the Deep Andaman Queen on a trip to Burma. Steve and the crew run a tight ship and the captain is very skilled at getting you to the right drop site for your dives. Not only one of the best diving experiences of my life but one of the greatest adventures so far.

Filippo Marelli, 23 Jan 2018 -

Perfect organization, good rooms and excellent crew: they'll do anything they can to help. It was my first time on a liveboard and I had a really good time; hopefully I will be on the boat again next year!

- Nancy Lyndhurst, 30 Dec 2018 -

The excellent crew, dive guides and food more than make up for some of the pre arrival experiences and uncomfy beds. Some Crew, are forced to sleep on sun deck which limits use at night. Great trip though!

My first Liveaboard was extraordinary with Steve and his incredible crew! This was also my very first trip to Thailand, although my week was spent on the boat, I couldnt have had a better time! When we boarded the boat on Day 1, Steve, head hancho (rightfully so) welcomes us with a much appreciated briefing. During the briefing we met each other, we were all very diverse and from all around the world. We also met the crew (Rockstars of the boat)! Steve then set us up for the week and talked us through every detail you can think of, idk how he remembers all this! He was so comprehensive, thorough and entertaining. Not only did Steve help to set our expectations, the entire week he helped us have fun, keep safe and make the very most from our trip. I’m also his biggest fan bc he was diligent about helping me get my regulators back after I left them on the minibus after the trip. This was 100% my fault, but immediately after I contacted him worried sick, he had located them for me by the time I boarded my plane home. 🙌🏻

We had 6 days 4 nights liveaboard cruise at Similan and Surin Island on New Year's Eve. Steve and the staff organized a party with presents for everyone and fireworks. Everything was very well organized onboard and the staff were very efficient and pleasant, always willing to help. Lot of food after every dive (4 dives a day) and free drinks and snacks at all times. The cabin was small but comfortable with hot water and air conditioning. Steve gave us very detailed briefings to make sure that we could dive safely and comfortably. All diving equipments are in good shape.  Great divings especially around Richelieu Rock where we got to see the whale shark and much more!

Amazing first liveaboard for my husband and I. So appreciated the excellent organization as well as the attentiveness and support of ALL the staff on board. And the extraordinary luxuries like post dive smoothies and warm facecloths! Food amazing-and plentiful. We especially liked the emphasis to respect and take care of the incredible marine environment we are so lucky to be able to enjoy. Gear and dive support/safety top notch. Thanks also for finding me all the cool nudibranchs Steve! (And the whale shark-I like the big things too!)

- Amy MacLucas, 11 Dec 2018 -

I had an absolutely brilliant time on the Similans trip. I've been out on DAQ twice now; first time just snorkelling, second time diving. The crew and dive staff are incredible, the trip felt really well organised and the team couldn't do enough to help.
